Pavel Markin

Pavel Markin was born on October 7, 1946, in Leningrad. He began taking photographs at the age of four, with his father as his first teacher. Miraculously, one of his earliest shots from that time, "Demonstration on Palace Square on May 1, 1952," has been preserved in the master photographer's archive.

His passion for photography continued through school and his studies at the Leningrad Technical School of Light Industry. He worked various jobs—as a tailor, cutter, fashion designer for women's outerwear, a Young Pioneer counselor and senior supervisor at a summer camp, a graphic artist, a schoolteacher of drawing and technical drawing, a loader, a supply manager, and even a cook—but never parted with his camera.

He first tried his hand as a photojournalist during his military service. His first published photo appeared in the divisional newspaper Za Rodinu! (For the Motherland!) in October 1968. A few days later, another photograph signed "Photo by Guards Corporal Pavel Markin" was published in the district newspaper Na Strazhe Rodiny (On Guard of the Motherland). It was with this publication that he completed evening courses for military correspondents.

After demobilization and with recommendations from the divisional and district newspapers, he enrolled in the newly established preparatory department at the State University in 1969. A year later, Markin became a student at the Faculty of Journalism of Leningrad State University.

Throughout his university years, Pavel actively collaborated with many Leningrad newspapers.

In the autumn of 1973, the newspaper Smena invited third-year student Markin to join as a staff photojournalist. In 1981, Pavel moved to the weekly Leningradsky Rabochiy (The Leningrad Worker) (later renamed Nevsky Vestnik), where he worked until the paper's final day. He then worked again at Smena for three years, followed by another three at the publishing house Kaleidoskop. From February 2000 to December 2001, he served as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Zashchita i Bezopasnost' (Defense and Security).

Since 1983, Pavel Mikhailovich has been the Dean of the Faculty of Photo Correspondents under the St. Petersburg Union of Journalists. This educational institution has existed since October 1959. Over the years, more than a thousand photojournalists have graduated from it, who can now be found in various corners of the globe.

Pavel Mikhailovich is a winner and laureate of numerous international, all-Russian, and city photo contests. His creative portfolio includes 36 solo exhibitions. He is a member of the creative group "Brat'ya po Razumu (Brothers in Mind)" and has been the chairman of the photo section under the St. Petersburg Creative Union of Journalists for twelve years, uniting over 200 master photographers from St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.

Markin is a regular contributor to all-Russian newspapers like IzvestiaRossiyskaya Gazeta, and Komsomolskaya Pravda. He is the staff photojournalist for the newspaper Rossiya in St. Petersburg and the Northwestern Federal District. He is also published in magazines such as "Novy Mtsenat""Gorod""Review inflight", and city newspapers including "Sankt-Peterburgskie Vedomosti""Smena""Metro""Utro""Vecherny Peterburg""Chas Pik""Pyat Uglov", and "Russky Invalid".
