Mikhail Burlatsky

Mikhail Burlatsky

Misha Burlatsky was born in Moscow in 1958, into the family of an opera singer. In 1961, his father, Alexey Burlatsky, was invited to the city of Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod), where Misha lived for what is still the greater part of his life. He served in the army, worked as a security guard, a metalworker, a graphic artist, studied at university, wrote poetry, engaged in graphic design, shot commercial videos for TV, but was always around photographers. In 1980, together with photographer Sergey Potapov, he created his first poster for the Gorky rock band "Dvizhenie" (Movement), with which he later spent many years responsible for its visual identity. Misha began photographing independently in 2005, and by 2006 he had become a member of the Russian Union of Photo Artists. In 2008, his solo exhibition "Nedomorfozy" (Mishapes) was successfully held at the "Fotoloft" gallery at Winzavod in Moscow.

In 2009, Misha mastered the wet collodion process and in 2010 moved from Moscow to St. Petersburg, where he organized his private "Photocabinet on Pestelya 13." He calls himself a service industry worker, which is partly true, as anyone can come here to have an artistic portrait made. What distinguishes the Photocabinet on Pestelya 13 from its predecessors, the common photo studios, is the theatricalization of the process. The model observes all stages – the making of the negative, and after the shoot – the appearance of the image in the darkroom. In his work, Misha uses large-format cameras and antique optics.

Beyond studio work, Misha undertakes so-called "ambrotype expeditions."
In 2010, he visited Israel, partially retracing the route of the Englishman Francis Frith, who took the first photographs of the Holy Land. In 2013, the series of wet collodion photographs "Bakhchisaray and Its Environs" was created. In 2015, Misha produced a series of photographs of "Volga Region Types" at the Nizhny Novgorod Architectural and Historical Museum-Reserve "Shchelokovsky Khutor." In the summer of 2016, the ambrotypist photographer, together with museum staff, visited the Tonshayevsky District of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, where he documented the rituals of local Mari people. At the end of 2016, Misha, commissioned by the "Artoffoto" gallery, created a series of ambrotypes near the town of Gryazovets in the Vologda Region. The result of these shoots was the exhibition "Connection of Times: On the Path to Nord Stream 2".
